Sourdough Bread!

Updated: Jan 23, 2021

Bread gets a bad rap- for obvious reasons. Too much gluten, too many carbs, and often times too many preservatives and additives that you end up feeling gross and sluggish after eating it, with little to no nutrients in return!

Imagine my excitement when I discovered how to create my own fresh, clean, and organic sourdough bread on the first try! This savory, hot loaf turned out PERFECT, it's able to be made in one day, and is super simple. We could get down a rabbit hole of all the health benefits that a true, clean sourdough presents. However, I'll sum it down to this: sourdough is filled with good pre and probiotics, is easier for your body to digest, and is loaded with nutrients!

You'll need a sourdough starter for this recipe. These are easily made (thank you Google) or can be snagged from a friend. Good luck! :)

Ingredients:

  • 7 oz. Sourdough Starter

  • 13 oz. Organic Flour

  • 6.5 oz. Filtered Water

  • 1/2 tsp. Honey

  • 1 1/2 tsp. Sea Salt

  • 1/2 tsp. Instant Yeast

Instructions:

  1. Combine the sourdough starter, flour, water, and honey in a bowl- stirring to combine. Let rest for about 30 minutes.

  2. Add the sea salt and instant yeast and begin to knead. (you can use a mixer or your hands. If you use your hands, put a small bowl of water next to your dough and keep your hands wet to keep the dough from sticking to it. Knead for 5 minutes, let it rest for 5 minutes, then knead for another 5 minutes.

  3. Cover your bowl with a towel and let rest in a warm area for 1-1.5 hours.

  4. Put parchment paper in a 10" dutch oven and set your dough ball inside. Pinch any seems closed, and let rest for another 1-1.5 hours with the lid on.

  5. Pre-heat your oven to 450 degrees, place the whole dutch oven inside and bake for 45 minutes.

  6. After 45 minutes, take the loaf out of the dutch oven and place it straight on the rack for 10-15 minutes. This will give it a satisfying crusty outside.

Enjoy!
